The 2016 Golden Melody Award Ceremony will light the stage at the Taipei Arena on June 25. Hosting the ceremony is the equally golden Mickey Huang, winner of multiple awards for his TV hosting prowess, who is re-donning his hosting duties from the previous year. “The stars of the ceremony are the musicians, the host is just there for continuity. I just hope I can entertain to the fullest.” Treading the red-carpet for this year’s pre-award show will be DJ Dennis (Dennis Au) and Lulu (Huang Lu Tz Yin) in their first television pairing. Both have hosted events in the past year and already seem to have a rapport. Mickey Huang has praised Lulu for her ability to hit both the serious and the comedic notes; and Dennis has described her as “smart, lively, and polite.” Dennis himself has already started a strict regimen to prepare himself for the event, and said that his hope for the red-carpet is safety and stability. Already in mental prep for the event, Lulu said that she has been nervous ever since she accepted the role. But, thanks to her mentor Huang’s thoughtful guidance, and Dennis’ reassurances, she is easing her way into the event. “They’re like my parents,” she said, laughing, “I’ve just been looking through information, listening to the Golden Melody songs, really immersing myself in the GMAs.” When asked about her wardrobe for the event, she said, “There will be enough goddesses walking down that carpet. I’ll be there as a fairy.”
Huang himself has spent much time and effort this year to make the event as spectacular as possible. “I hope we can make it a little more entertaining this time around. I tried to incorporate the whole picture while planning, so I recommended Lulu to do the audience warm-up portion to get everything going well right at the start. And thanks to Lulu for her enthusiastic yes when I asked her. She’s going to be the longest working host in GMA history—from the red carpet all the way to the ceremony’s end.” Huang also spoke about the new trend in this year’s nominees: “This year’s nominations are unique in that we have the big names but also the new musicians, the up-and-comers. I’m happy to see this new landscape. The awards won’t be centered on the same people as usual. And I hope we can get some of the great musicians who had accomplishments but weren’t nominated to join in the ceremony, too.” On the problem of time, he asks the viewer to think about the high emotions of the moment: “I myself don’t like the ‘play them off’ music. I like to let it sink in; leave it to their own discretion.”
The three hosts have been communicating over messaging services, exchanging advice and know-how. “I’ve hosted quite a few red-carpets myself, and I know the challenges they will face. So, I can give them a little comfort, and we can all help each other,” Huang said. “Keep your eyes—and ears—open,” was the advice he gave to Lulu. “Stay lucid, and turn up your awareness, and absolutely do not space off. Know the basic information by heart. With Dennis’ professional experience, I hope the event comes to a smooth completion.”
