The 2021 GMA Occupying Academia, a series of activities for the 2021 Golden Melody Festival, officially started a few days ago. Featuring a three-week intensive course with a total of 12 lessons, the 2021 GMA Occupying Academia is instructed by Europa Huang, a top music producer in Taiwan. He will be leading a team of top artists from Taiwan’s music industry to cultivate the next generation of musicians and artists. On April 24, Tanya Chua, three-time winner of the Best Female Vocalist (Mandarin) award, was invited to the workshop to share her creative journey and mindset with the future of Taiwan’s music.
Tanya Chua is a strong Chinese-language artist, holding GMA records for being the first singer to receive three Best Female Vocalist (Mandarin) awards. She also received the Best Album Producer at the Golden Melody Awards in 2008. Whether in creation or performance, Tanya has strong a personal style and charm and this is her first time serving as a lecturer at the GMA Occupying Academia. Tanya Chua shared with students that, “there is no right or wrong in music, it’s open for discussion.” She also recalled her time singing in pubs where she had immersed herself in various genres and developed her own style.
In addition to setting GMA record, Tanya Chua has also many held concert tours. In January 2021, Tanya was able to hold a concert at the renowned Taipei Arena despite the pandemic. “I have suffered from low self-esteem,” Tanya said candidly, “As a singer, you have to live with negative emotions and channel it creatively.” In addition to sharing creative experiences, Tanya also shared her own experience and the path that every artist endures.
In the hopes of preparing the future of Taiwan’s music industry, the GMA Occupying Academia cultivates Taiwan's next generation of pop music artists. Top musicians such as David Ke, RAZOR Chiang, and Howe Chen, are invited to teach and instruct. With intensive courses and hands-on practices, students can work with like-minded people to create their own music.
The 2021 GMA Festival will also host a slew of events including Conference, Biz-matching, and Showcase Ticketed Concert. Both physical and online events will be held in conjunction.
