The Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development, MOC has supported the music industry for many years. It has proactively supporting domestic bands to participate in international music festivals, promoting the national brand of mainstream music “Taiwan Beats”, and thereby successfully expanding mainstream Mandarin music abroad. In order to help the music industry and related professionals to expand their channels for international performances, the Golden Music Festival will hold a “Speed Meeting” event. The “Speed Meeting” event will be part of a series of events that the Golden Music Festival will be holding at LE MERIDEN TAIPEI at 5PM from June 21st to 23rd and it has invited 11 renowned music festival curators from Canada, the United States, England, Germany, France, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, and China to come to Taiwan for the opportunity to network, to provide a platform for matching between the domestic music industry and international music festivals, to promote future transnational collaborations, and increase exposure of mainstream Taiwanese music abroad.
Those who will be participating for the first time this year in the “Speed Meeting” event will include England’s Liverpool Sound City Director: Joanne Whitty, Germany’s Reeperbahn Music Festival PR Paul Cheetham, and Japan’s Summer Sonic Music Festival PM Onta Shiroh Kawaguchi. Liverpool, England was the origin of the Beatles and besides being a place fans from all over the world flock to, it is also home to the Liverpool Sound City Music Festival, one of the largest rock festivals in the world. The events for the festival include: concerts, seminars, digital technology, electronic art, movies, etc. Germany’s Reeperbahn Music Festival is considered Europe’s largest festival for electronic dance music and electronic related music, winning the 2016 Europe’s Best Indoor Music Festival Award. Events include: art, movies, exhibitions, concerts, etc. Hopefully through this year’s networking, that there’ll be an opportunity for a future collaboration between Taiwan and Reeperbahn Music Festival. Japan’s Summer Sonic Music Festival is a famous rock music festival that’s held annually in August in the cities of Tokyo and Osaka. The festival attracts many well-known Japanese and international bands. Taiwanese artists GBOYSWAG and Chen Hui Ting will both be attending the festival held in Tokyo this year.
In addition, James Minor, who is the general manager of the world renowned SWSX Music Festival, which includes interactive technology, movies, and music, will be attending the Golden Melody Awards for the third time. Last year, he met and enjoyed talking with Matzka during speed meeting, and even went to enjoy Matzka’s showcase. Matzka was therefore invited to perform at the SXSW Music Festival in March of this year and received praise by the media both domestically and abroad. Neill Dixon, the Director of Canada’s CMW, one of the most influential music conferences in North America that’ll be entering into its 35th year, will also be attending for the second time. France’s MIDEM, which has just ended last week, will also be invited to attend this year’s Golden Melody Awards. MIDEM is the world’s oldest music tradeshow and attracts music industry professionals and media worldwide to network through copyright exchange, performances, and forums. Hopefully, through speed meeting, Taiwanese bands and singers will have more opportunities to perform abroad.
Additional music festivals that will be participating in the “Speed Meeting” event include Hong Kong’s Clockenflap, Singapore’s Music Matters, Japan’s TIMM, Thailand’s Big Mountain Music Festival, and China’s Strawberry Music Festival. In particular, Japan’s TIMM and Thailand’s Big Mountain Music Festival has already established a strategic alliance with GMA, exchanging resources for performances and promotions. The Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development commented that area and transnational networking and collaborations are becoming increasingly popular. Hopefully, the Golden Melody Awards will bring about alliances with various music festivals worldwide and put the Taiwanese mainstream music onto the international stage.
